Batanes adopts Phoenix loureiroi

Batanes adopts Phoenix loureiroi var. loureiroi as a priority conservation species

The people of Batanes endorsed the adoption of Phoenix loureiroi var. loureiroi, locally known as voyavoy, as the province's flagship species for conservation. This was manifested in a resolution passed and signed by the participants during the seminar-workshop "Conservation and Sustainable Utilization of Voyavoy in Batanes Island", held in Batan Island last May 15, 2003.One of the important outputs of the workshop was the creation of Task Force Voyavoy which is a program for the conservation and management of the species. Some recommendations include basic research on the biology and propagation of the species, community participation in conservation of the species, public awareness, and educational campaign.

The seminar-workshop was sponsored by the Philippine National Museum, BIC-PU in cooperation with the National Commission on Indigenous People, office in Batanes.
