MacArthur Foundation Supports Philippine Conservation Programs

The World Environment and Resources Programs of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, USA, support conservation , public education, policy studies, and sustainable development projects relating to key environmental issues in the tropics. The program continues to support conservation activities in geographic areas chosen on the basis of species diversity, endemism, and degree of endangerment. One such areas is the South China Sea region, where the program continue to support projects in Malaysia, Vietnam, and the Philippines.

In the Philippines, various financial grants were awarded to different agencies and institutions concerned with environmental issues, Current projects which focus on coastal zone management, conservation science, and environment education include:

FUND FOR NATURE OF THE PHILIPPINES. Quezon City

In support of a program to improve the management of protected areas in the Philippines (over 3 years).

HARIBON FOUNDATION FOR THE CONSERVATION OF NATURAL RESOURCES, San Juan

In support of a biodiversity conservation programs in southern Luzon (over 3 years).

LEGAL RIGHTS AND NATURAL RESOURCES CENTER, Quezon City

For legal and policy research programs and activities to up hold the traditional land of indigenous peoples (over 2 years).

MINDANAO STATE UNIVERSITY, Ilagan City

In support of a biodiversity field research programs and activities to uphold the traditional land claims of indigenous people (over 2 years)

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF THE PHILIPPINES, Manila

In support of biodiversity conservation programs (over 3 years).

PALAWAN COUNCIL FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, Puerto Princesa City

In support of plant inventory and data base development programs (over 2 years)

PHILIPPINES EAGLE CONSERVATION FOUNDATION, Davao City

In support of community development, wildlife management and environmental education programs in Mindanao (over 2 years)

TAMBUYOG DEVELOPMENT CENTER, Quezon City

In support of training for local leaders in a sustainable coastal areas development program (over 2 years).

ASIAN INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT, Makati City

In support of training programs in community based resource management (over 2 years)

INTERNATIONAL CENTER FOR LIVING AQUATIC RESOURCES MANAGEMENT, Makati City

To develop a multinational management strategy for the conservation and sustainable use of marine species in the South China Sea (over 3 years).
