Formation of the IUCN/SSC Philippine Plant Specialist Group Category: Articles Date Posted: 2005-12-28 Approval of the Proposal for the Formation of the IUCN/SSC Philippine Plant Specialist Group The proposal for the formation of the IUCN/SSC Philippine Plant Specialist Group (PPSG), prepared by Domingo A. Madulid, was approved by the SSC Steering Committee and announced in the SSC Activity Report (December-June 2000) of the SSC Chair, Dr. David Brackett. D.A. Madulid was appointed as Chair of this Specialist Group in a letter signed by Dr. Brackett in April 2000. Dr. Madulid has worked with the SSC as a member of the Plant Conservation Committee and a member of other Plant Specialist Groups such as the palm and Carnivorous Plant Specialist Groups. He was also formally welcomed in the Plant Conservation Committee in its regular meeting in Atlanta, Georgia in June 2000. The formation of the PPSG was strongly supported and facilitated by David Given, Chair of the Plant Species Conservation Program and Wendy Strahm, Programme Officer of the IUCN Species Survival Program. Dr. Brackett, upon the recommendation of D.A. Madulid, Chair of the PPSG, will now extend invitations to Philippine and foreign scientists to Philippine and foreign scientists, field biologists, and other researchers who are committed and have made significant contributions to the conservation of Philippine plant diversity at the species level. This local group will form part of the global network of specialist members whose skills and insights have helped identify and promote actions necessary to stem the loss of the world?s biodiversity through the restoration of threatened species to healthy population levels. |
